MPI approved products NZ — what your verifier will actually ask for, Arandee
MPI approval applies product by product, not across a range. What a verifier actually checks — approval letters, mandated wording, expiry dates, and why dairy sits under separate clearance.

MPI Approved Products NZ: What Your Verifier Will Actually Ask For

The most common compliance gap we see isn’t a business using the wrong product. It’s a business unable to prove the right one is approved.

MPI approval is granted product by product — formulation by formulation, category by category. That’s true of all MPI approved products NZ food businesses rely on. A supplier saying “our range is MPI approved” tells you nothing about the specific container on your shelf.

Here’s what a verifier actually checks, and how to get ahead of it.

Approval applies to the product, not the range

Two items from the same product family will often carry different credentials.

MAC Siliglide Food Grade Silicone Fluid and MAC Siliglide Food Grade Silicone Spray both carry MPI approval and DMC coverage for dairy. MAC Siliglide Food Grade Silicone Grease carries MPI approval but not DMC.

Same name, same shelf, different clearance. If your site handles dairy, that distinction is the difference between a clean audit and a corrective action.

This is why every one of our MPI approved products NZ verifiers might check carries its own compliance badges. Where a badge is highlighted, the credential applies. Where it’s greyed out, it doesn’t — and it isn’t inherited from the products around it.

The approval letter sets the exact wording you may use

Every MPI approval arrives as a letter naming the product, its approval code, and the premises it may be used in. That letter also states the precise claim wording permitted.

For MAC Slay Cockroach Bait Insecticide, the approved statement is:

MPI Approved Type D (All animal product except dairy)

Any claim must include the approval code, and must be limited to that wording unless MPI specifies otherwise. Loose phrasing on a label, a spec sheet or a tender document is a finding waiting to happen.

Your verifier can ask for the letter itself

Approval letters carry a standing condition: a copy must be available to the animal products officer or recognised verifier on request.

A badge on a website is a signal. The letter is the evidence. Facilities that keep current approval letters filed alongside their SDS and TDS documents move through verification considerably faster than those that go looking on the day.

Approvals expire — and almost nobody checks

Every approval has an end date. The MAC Slay Cockroach Bait approval, for example, runs to 7 July 2028.

Approvals can also be withdrawn earlier if directions for use change, performance is unsatisfactory, or a formulation is altered. A product that was compliant when it was specified three years ago may not be today.

If your register of MPI approved products NZ auditors will review was built more than a year ago and hasn’t been revisited, that’s the gap to close first.

What MPI approval is not

Worth stating plainly, in MPI’s own words: an approval must not be used as a Ministry for Primary Industries endorsement of any claim made for the product.

Approval confirms a compound is suitable for a defined use in a defined environment. It is not a performance guarantee, not a recommendation, and not transferable to a different use category. Anyone presenting it as endorsement is overreaching.

Dairy is treated separately

Approvals frequently read “all animal product except dairy.” A product cleared for general food-contact use is not automatically cleared for dairy-contact areas.

That’s what the DMC badge exists to signal. Check it specifically rather than relying on the MPI badge alone — it’s the most frequent assumption error we see, and the easiest one to make. MPI maintains separate registers for dairy and non-dairy maintenance compounds if you want to verify a product yourself.

Dairy-contact areas require DMC coverage, not general MPI food-contact approval

Three checks worth running this month

1. Pull the current approval letter for every regulated chemical on site and confirm the code covers the area it’s used in.
2. Check the expiry date on each. Diarise anything inside twelve months.
3. Confirm dairy-contact areas are covered by products carrying DMC, not general food-contact approval.
